He took night classes in UCD, graduating with a diploma in public administration (1956) and a first-class honours B.Comm. He joined the civil service in 1954 as an executive officer in the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General before switching the next year to the Department of Industry and Commerce. In 1953 he won both a state scholarship and a corporation scholarship for university, but was unable to avail of either due to muddled regulations. He re-joined his nuclear family in Limerick where he was well educated by the Christian Brothers at Sexton Street and acquired his lifelong Munster accent. As his father was transferred frequently, Kieran spent much of his early life alone with his grandmother on a farm in east Galway this possibly contributed to his aloofness in adulthood.

The Sponsorship will assist with future costs, taking away some of the financial burden, whilst allowing Kieran to achieve his goals and enjoy something that he loves to do. The funding provided by Cunninghame Housing Association will enable Kieran to attend the European Championships and be part of Team GB, covering all of the costs involved, from travel to accommodation. Kieran’s Gymnast Team have been selected to join Team GB for this year’s European Championships which are being held in Portugal from 1st December – 5th December 2021.

Kieran is part of a Team which have become Scottish Champions, first competing in 2019.

Kieran is 15 years of age and has been a gymnast for over 10 years, currently training 3 times a week after school at Inverclyde in Largs as well as taking part in many competitions across the UK and further afield. On Monday 1st November 2021 John Kelly, Chairperson of Cunninghame Housing Association presented a cheque for £1,000 to Kieran Walker, a young gymnast from Dalry, as part of a 3-year sponsorship.
